Chelsea Football Club have confirmed that England international Raheem Sterling has left the club by mutual consent, bringing an end to his three-and-a-half-year spell at Stamford Bridge. The 31-year-old winger is now a free agent and free to negotiate with clubs outside the transfer window.
Sterling’s departure was announced on Wednesday, with Chelsea issuing a brief statement saying:
“Raheem Sterling has today departed Chelsea Football Club by mutual agreement, bringing to an end three-and-a-half seasons as our player… We thank Raheem for the contribution he made while a Chelsea player and wish him well for the next stage in his career.”
A Difficult End to a High-Profile Move
Sterling joined Chelsea from Manchester City in the summer of 2022 in a deal worth around £47.5 million, becoming one of the first marquee signings under the club’s new ownership. However, his time in west London failed to live up to expectations.
Although he made 81 appearances for the Blues across all competitions, Sterling had not featured competitively since May 2024 and spent much of the current season training away from the first-team squad.
Last season he spent on loan at Arsenal but was unable to secure a regular starting role under manager Mikel Arteta. Since returning to Chelsea, Sterling was largely excluded from the matchday squad and even trained separately from the main group.
Reports indicate that Sterling waived much of what was owed on the final 18 months of his contract a lucrative deal reportedly worth over £325,000 per week in order to secure an early exit.
Future Uncertain but Open
With his contract terminated, Sterling is now able to join any club as a free transfer. Several teams including Premier League clubs Fulham, Crystal Palace and West Ham have been linked with interest, though no deal has been confirmed.
As one of England’s most recognized forwards of his generation, Sterling will be looking to revive his playing career after a challenging period, hoping his next move offers more consistent game time and impact.
