Nigerian actor Amaechi Muonagor dies after battling ill health

Veteran Nigerian actor, Amaechi Muonagor has reportedly passed away following a prolonged period of illness.

The actor died after battling with stroke and kidney-related disease. He was 62.

According to sources close to him, he was undergoing weekly dialysis and physiotherapy to treat the paralysis brought on by a stroke.

Vanguard Nigeria reported that a social media commentator took to X (formerly Twitter) on Sunday to announce the actor’s death.

“Deeply heartbroken by the news of Amaechi Muonagor’s passing. He was a talented Nollywood actor whose presence on our screens was truly masterful. We watched with concern as he battled health issues, offering whatever support we could to help him seek treatment in India. This tragic loss highlights the need for better healthcare in our country,” Morris Monye wrote.

This comes barely a week after Amaechi Muonagor pleaded for financial assistance from the general public to fund his medical expenses.

The actor who was down with a kidney disease was seeking to travel to India for a transplant.

In a video shared on social media, Amaechi Muonagor was seen unwell, lying on a bed with a colleague actor Kingsley Orji seated next to him.

The disease had affected his speech and movement; making it difficult for him to speak for himself.

Before this, the veteran actor disclosed, four months ago, that he had been grappling with the effects of a stroke for nearly a year.

He said on the fateful day when the stroke struck him, he had wrapped up filming on a movie set and was preparing to enter his car. 

Since that day, Mr Muonagor said he has endured an arduous journey of recovery, spending months within the confines of a hospital to regain his health.

Mr Muonagor is known for his roles in films like 2 RatsAki Na UkwaMeet The In-LawsUkwaThe Last BurialPolice RecruitKarishika and others.

Meanwhile, the actor’s death comes three weeks after the death of his colleague John Okafor, popularly known as Mr Ibu.
