As the Muslim community ushers in this year’s Ramadan, President John Dramani Mahama has shared a goodwill message acknowledging the spiritual significance of the period.

In a public statement issued on Friday, the President characterized the sacred month as “a special time; a month of reflection, renewal, and coming together as one community.” His remarks recognize Ramadan not only as a religious obligation but as a moment of collective moral reset for society.

The month-long fast, observed from dawn to sunset, is regarded by Muslims as a period of heightened devotion, discipline, and charitable giving. Against this backdrop, the President urged citizens to allow the season to strengthen social bonds and reinforce peaceful coexistence.

He appealed for national harmony, stating, “Let us strengthen the bonds that bind us and deepen our sense of togetherness across our beloved nation.”

Ramadan, which spans thirty days depending on the lunar calendar, places emphasis on prayer, self-restraint, generosity, and compassion toward the less privileged. The President’s message aligns with these values, encouraging reflection and unity at a time when Ghana continues to navigate economic and social challenges.

Bringing his message to a close, President Mahama extended personal goodwill, saying, “From my family, we wish you a spiritually fulfilling and blessed Ramadan. Ramadan Mubarak! May Allah accept your worship.”

Muslims across the country are expected to begin fasting following the confirmation of the new moon, marking the start of one of Islam’s most sacred observances.

National greetings during major religious observances serve as important symbols of inclusiveness in a pluralistic democracy like Ghana. Beyond symbolism, however, the deeper message of Ramadan – sacrifice, accountability, humility, and generosity – offers lessons relevant to governance and civic responsibility.

If the values emphasized during this sacred season are reflected in leadership, public policy, and everyday conduct, Ghana’s social cohesion will be strengthened.

Ramadan Kareem to the Muslim community in Ghana and abroad.
