Government Communication Alone Won’t Fix Tomato Shortage – Dr Charles Nyaaba

By Boakye Stephen, Kumasi, Ghana | Reporting for Ghanaian News, Canada
Dr. Charles Nyaaba, CEO of Akuafo Nketewa, has criticized the Food and Agriculture Minister, asserting that public assurances are insufficient to tackle Ghana’s looming tomato shortage.
Speaking on Joy FM, Dr. Nyaaba warned that farmers, the key drivers of production, have not been adequately consulted. He questioned claims of mobilizing over 100 communities and highlighted the country’s reliance on tomato imports from Burkina Faso between December and May.
“This is not about PR work… farmers remain uncertain about where tomatoes will come from during the critical period,” he stressed.
He emphasized the difference between building market infrastructure and ensuring production, warning that marketing centers alone cannot solve supply challenges. He urged coordinated national support, engagement, and practical assistance for farmers to stabilize supply and prevent price hikes.
Commentary:
Ghana’s food security cannot rely solely on media statements. Farmers must be directly empowered, incentivized, and protected, or shortages will persist, creating economic and social instability.
