Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Honourable Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa (MP), has held high-level diplomatic talks at the United States Department of State in Washington, D.C., marking a significant step in strengthening the partnership between the two nations.

During the visit, Minister Ablakwa was hosted by Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs, Allison Hooker, and Senior Bureau Official for African Affairs, Nick Checker.
The discussions covered a broad range of areas including trade relations, business opportunities, social sector agreements, and security cooperation, with both sides exploring new opportunities for businesses in Ghana and the United States.

A key focus of the meeting was the strengthening of existing bilateral frameworks. The talks touched on major initiatives such as the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) and the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) programmes, as well as preparations ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

On the sporting front, the 2026 World Cup, which kicks off on June 11 across the United States, Canada, and Mexico, featured prominently in the discussions. Ghana’s Black Stars are drawn in Group L alongside England, Croatia, and Panama, with their opening match scheduled for June 17 in Dallas, and the government has budgeted US$13.7 million to support the campaign.

Minister Ablakwa also used the Washington platform to acknowledge improvements in consular services for Ghanaian citizens. He commended the United States for improving visa processing at its embassy in Ghana, noting that enhanced arrangements at the US Embassy in Accra have led to a meaningful reduction in waiting times for visa applicants.

The Washington engagement represents an escalation in the diplomatic relationship between the two countries, following a series of bilateral meetings held in Ghana over recent months between Minister Ablakwa and Acting US Ambassador Rolf Olson.

Both parties concluded the meeting by committing to further enhance their existing relations for mutual benefit, signalling a new chapter of deepened cooperation between Accra and Washington.
