Edmonton

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has issued a public warning regarding a fake announcement circulating on social media claiming that the 2026 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) school selection exercise has commenced.

GES officials described the notice as false and unauthorized.

According to the Service, the fake publication instructed candidates to select and submit five preferred schools and directed parents to an unofficial WhatsApp support line.

“The information did not originate from the Ghana Education Service and should be disregarded completely,” the Service said in a statement.

Officials urged parents, students and teachers to rely only on official communication channels for updates regarding school placement and selection procedures.

Risk of Fraud

Education authorities warned that individuals behind the false notice may be attempting to obtain personal information from unsuspecting members of the public.

Analysis

The incident highlights the growing challenge of misinformation in the digital age, particularly when targeting students and parents during critical academic periods.

Commentary | Boakye Stephen

False educational announcements can create confusion and expose families to fraud. Public institutions must continue strengthening digital communication systems while citizens exercise caution and verify information before acting on online messages.
