LEICESTER / TORONTO — The chapter is closed. After two difficult seasons at the King Power Stadium — bookended by relegation from the Premier League and now from the Championship — Ghana captain Jordan Ayew has officially departed Leicester City following the expiration of his contract. The 34-year-old is among 10 senior players released by the Foxes as the club begins a painful rebuild ahead of life in England’s third tier, League One.
For Ayew it marks the end of a stint that began with genuine promise. He joined Leicester in August 2024 for a reported fee of £5 million — rising to £8 million through add-ons — from Crystal Palace, arriving as the club prepared for a return to the Premier League. What followed was two seasons of turbulence Leicester fans will want to forget quickly: back-to-back relegations that took them from the top flight all the way down to League One in the space of 24 months. Through it all, Ayew remained professional — making 72 appearances and scoring 11 league goals, a record that stands as one of the more respectable individual returns in an otherwise grim collective story.
A Career That Speaks for Itself
Whatever the circumstances of his Leicester exit, Jordan Ayew’s place in Ghanaian football history is beyond dispute. At 34, he has accumulated over 522 club appearances and 100+ career goals — numbers that place him among the most productive Ghanaian footballers ever to play in European football. His career has taken him from Olympique de Marseille in France through Swansea City, Aston Villa, and six seasons at Crystal Palace — where he made more than 200 appearances and became one of the club’s most reliable and beloved players — before his move to Leicester.
His international record is equally distinguished. As Ghana’s captain, Ayew has led the Black Stars through qualification campaigns, AFCON tournaments, and now into what will be a landmark World Cup campaign. He is the son of Abedi Pele — widely regarded as the greatest Ghanaian footballer of all time — and the younger brother of Andre Ayew. The Ayew family’s contribution to Ghanaian football across three generations is unmatched, and Jordan’s career has been a worthy extension of that extraordinary legacy.
Next Stop: The World Cup in Canada
The timing of Ayew’s club departure — painful as the circumstances are — could not be better aligned with what matters most to him right now. With his contract expiry freeing him from club obligations, Ayew is now able to focus entirely on Ghana’s World Cup preparations. He is expected to captain the Black Stars in the upcoming friendly against Wales on June 2 at CaThe The The The The The The rdiff City Stadium — a warm-up match that will carry added significance given it takes place at the home ground of a club where Ayew himself once played.

He is then expected to earn his place in coach Carlos Queiroz’s final 26-man World Cup squad — due to FIFA by June 1 — and lead the Black Stars through one of the most challenging group stages Ghana has ever faced. Group L pits Ghana against England, Croatia, and Panama, with the opening game scheduled for June 17 at BMO Field in Toronto. For Ghanaian-Canadians across the country, that match represents an extraordinary opportunity — to watch their captain lead the Black Stars live, on Canadian soil, on football’s biggest stage.
What Happens After the World Cup?
With his Leicester contract expired and no club announcement made, Ayew enters the summer transfer window as a free agent. At 34, the reality is that the top European leagues are an unlikely destination — most top clubs at Championship level and above will be looking at younger options. However, Ayew’s experience, fitness, and the global platform of a World Cup appearance could attract interest from clubs across Europe, the Middle East, or the MLS — where veteran European players with strong profiles have found lucrative and rewarding homes in recent years.
