Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney is preparing for an official visit to China next week, marking the first time a Canadian leader will travel to Beijing in over eight years. The four-day trip, scheduled from January 14 to 17, comes as Ottawa seeks to rebuild and deepen economic and political ties with China after a period of tension.

Beijing has emphasized that it attaches great importance to the visit, which was made at the invitation of Chinese Premier Li Qiang. Officials say the trip is an opportunity to strengthen dialogue, enhance mutual trust, and expand pragmatic cooperation between the two countries. Meetings will be held with top Chinese leaders, including President Xi Jinping, Premier Li Qiang, and Zhao Leji, head of China’s legislature.

During talks, both sides are expected to address trade, energy, agriculture and international security, key areas in which Canada and China share interests. Carney’s government has been pushing to diversify Canada’s economic partnerships, reducing over-reliance on the United States by expanding markets in Asia and beyond.

Canada and China have experienced strained relations in recent years. Diplomatic ties cooled sharply after Canada’s 2018 detention of a senior Chinese tech executive at the request of the U.S. and the subsequent detention of two Canadians in China. More recently, both countries imposed high tariffs on each other’s goods, compounding trade tensions.

Despite these challenges, officials from both capitals describe the upcoming visit as part of a gradual improvement in bilateral relations. Carney and Xi previously met on the sidelines of an international summit in South Korea last October, setting the stage for this high-level visit.

China’s Foreign Ministry has expressed hope that the talks will lead to more practical cooperation and a stable framework for future engagement, benefiting citizens in both countries while contributing to global peace and prosperity.
