Canada has launched a unique fan engagement campaign aimed at rallying support ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, following Italy’s failure to qualify for the tournament.
The initiative, led by Canada Soccer, invites Italian fans particularly those living in Toronto to swap their national team jerseys for Canadian ones in a symbolic gesture of support.
The campaign took place in Toronto’s Little Italy district, where organizers set up a free jersey exchange event encouraging fans to “switch sides” and back the host nation instead.
The move comes after Italy suffered a shock playoff defeat to Bosnia and Herzegovina, missing out on the World Cup for the third consecutive time. The result has left a large Italian diaspora in Canada without a team to support in the tournament.
Officials say the campaign is designed to build momentum and national unity ahead of the global event, which Canada will co-host alongside the United States and Mexico.
Canada is set to compete in Group B, where it will face Bosnia and Herzegovina, Qatar, and Switzerland.
The initiative also reflects the country’s diverse cultural makeup, with more than 1.5 million Canadians of Italian descent—many of whom are concentrated in the Greater Toronto Area.
However, the campaign comes at a time when Canada’s national team faces questions about its readiness for the tournament. Recent performances have raised concerns about attacking efficiency and squad depth, particularly following underwhelming results in international friendlies.
Despite these challenges, officials remain optimistic that fan engagement efforts like the jersey swap will help boost morale and create a strong home advantage atmosphere.
With the World Cup just months away, Canada is not only preparing on the pitch but also working to win hearts off it—turning even disappointed fans into potential supporters.
