Former Vice President and New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential candidate, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has urged the party’s newly elected Ashanti Regional executives to prioritise unity and inclusion as the party prepares for the 2028 general elections.
Dr Bawumia made the call during a closed-door meeting with the executives at his office in Accra.
The delegation was led by the newly elected Ashanti Regional Chairman, Odeneho Kwaku Appiah, popularly known as COKA.
The meeting forms part of Dr Bawumia’s ongoing engagements with newly elected regional executives across the country following the NPP’s regional elections.
Addressing the Ashanti Regional leadership, the former Vice President stressed that rebuilding and strengthening the party ahead of 2028 would require the involvement of all stakeholders, including individuals who contested but were unsuccessful in the regional elections.
“I reiterate my call for unity and the inclusion of all stakeholders, including those who were not elected, for the task ahead because 2028 will require all hands on deck,” Dr Bawumia told the executives.
He described the party’s ongoing reorganisation, from the polling station and electoral area levels through to constituency and regional structures, as an important foundation for the NPP’s efforts to reclaim political power.
“The goal for all of us is to win the 2028 election. This is just a stepping stone towards winning 2028. We must unite, we must organise, and we must win in 2028. I am committed to working with all of you and every member of our great party to achieve that,” he added.
For their part, Chairman COKA and the newly elected executives pledged their commitment to strengthening the NPP in the Ashanti Region and working towards victory in both the presidential and parliamentary elections in 2028.
Dr Bawumia has, since the regional elections, held similar engagements with elected party executives from the Greater Accra, Central, Western and Savannah Regions.
Commentary
For the NPP, unity after internal elections may prove just as important as winning the elections themselves. The ability to reconcile competing interests and mobilise former contestants will be a major test of the party’s preparations for 2028.
