Anthony Joshua Survives Deadly Car Crash in Ogun State, Two People Killed

World-renowned British-Nigerian boxer Anthony Joshua has survived a serious road accident on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway in Nigeria that tragically claimed the lives of two people on Monday morning, according to local police and traffic officials.

The crash occurred around 11:00 a.m. (local time) in the Makun area of Ogun State, just before the Sagamu Interchange on one of Nigeria’s busiest highways. Eyewitnesses and authorities say the vehicle carrying Joshua collided with a stationary truck under circumstances still under investigation.

Details Of The Collision


Joshua was travelling as a passenger in a Lexus SUV that was part of a small convoy when the accident happened. According to the Ogun State Police Command, the boxer was seated in the rear of the vehicle and sustained minor injuries. He was conscious after the crash and was quickly attended to by emergency responders before being taken to a nearby hospital for further evaluation.

Tragically, two other occupants of the SUV,believed to be fellow passengers in the same vehicle, died at the scene and their bodies were conveyed to a morgue in Sagamu. The identities of the deceased have not yet been officially released.

Preliminary Cause Under Investigation


The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and the police have launched investigations into the cause of the collision. Early assessments suggest excessive speed and an unsafe overtaking manoeuvre may have contributed to the crash, according to a statement by the FRSC. Officials are also examining whether a tyre burst or mechanical issue could have played a role.

Reactions and Context


Video and images circulating on social media show the wrecked vehicle and scenes of onlookers assisting at the scene. In one clip, Joshua, shirtless and shaken,is seen being helped from the wreckage before being placed in an emergency vehicle.

The accident comes just days after Joshua’s recent high-profile knockout victory over Jake Paul in Miami on December 19, 2025, marking a dramatic and shocking turn for the boxing star during what was meant to be a holiday visit to Nigeria.


Joshua, 36, is a former two-time unified heavyweight champion and one of boxing’s most recognizable figures. He has strong family ties to Nigeria, having spent parts of his childhood in the country before rising to global prominence in the sport.

Ongoing Debate


Authorities continue to investigate the exact sequence of events that led to the deadly crash, and further official updates are expected as inquiries progress. Family representatives and Joshua’s management have yet to release a detailed statement, but his promoter has indicated that Joshua is in stable condition and recovering.
