Healthcare delivery at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital has suffered a major setback after doctors officially withdrew their services over concerns relating to patient safety, professional standards and conditions within the facility.

The industrial action, announced by the Korle-Bu Doctors Association (KODA), reportedly took effect from May 2, 2026.

In an official notice, the association stressed that the decision was not politically motivated but rather driven by concerns about the long-term effectiveness of healthcare delivery at Ghana’s premier referral hospital.

“”KODA does not take this step lightly. It is taken in the interest of patient safety, professional integrity, and the long-term effectiveness of this institution,”” the statement noted.

The doctors further urged hospital management to respond urgently to the concerns raised.

“”We trust that Management will act with the urgency that these matters demand,”” the association added.

The strike has triggered anxiety among patients and relatives, many of whom fear delays in treatment and medical emergencies if the impasse remains unresolved.

Health sector observers say the development reflects deeper frustrations within Ghana’s healthcare system, including pressure on medical personnel, inadequate logistics and increasing operational burdens.

When doctors begin withdrawing services over patient safety concerns, the nation must pay attention immediately. Healthcare professionals are often the first to witness the realities inside hospitals, and prolonged neglect within the health sector can eventually place ordinary citizens at greater risk.
