WAEC Cracks Down On BECE Malpractice As 43 Teachers Are Arrested

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has confirmed the arrest of 43 teachers over their alleged involvement in examination malpractice during the recently concluded Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).

Speaking on JoyNews’ The Pulse, WAEC’s Head of Public Affairs, John Kapi, disclosed that all those arrested so far are teachers.

“A total of 43 people had been arrested so far, all of whom are teachers,” he revealed.

Mr Kapi clarified that no students had been arrested in connection with the ongoing investigations.

“Well, usually students are not put under arrest. Their statements are taken…” he explained while discussing WAEC’s procedures regarding examination offences.

The development comes as authorities intensify efforts to protect the integrity of national examinations amid increasing concerns over organised cheating networks involving invigilators, supervisors, and some school officials.

WAEC says the council remains committed to enforcing strict anti-malpractice measures to maintain the credibility of Ghana’s educational system.

The council has repeatedly warned that examination malpractice weakens academic standards and undermines public confidence in certificates issued to students.

Commentary | Stephen Boakye

When teachers, who are expected to protect integrity and guide students morally, become involved in examination malpractice, the educational foundation of the nation becomes endangered. Academic dishonesty does not only destroy credibility; it also produces graduates who may lack genuine competence in the future workforce. Ghana’s educational reforms must therefore focus not only on students but also on ethical accountability among educators.
