A leading media and communications strategist, Philip Nai, is calling on Ghana to strategically position itself during the 2026 FIFA World Cup to promote its tourism, arts, and cultural identity to a global audience.

In a reflective opinion piece, Nai argues that while the World Cup is primarily a sporting event, it also functions as one of the world’s most powerful marketing platforms, capable of shaping national images and influencing international perception.

He notes that billions of viewers will follow the tournament across the United States, Canada, and Mexico, creating a rare opportunity for countries to project their identity far beyond football.

“The real winners of the World Cup are often not just the teams that lift the trophy, but the nations that successfully tell their story to the world,” he observed.

Nai highlights Ghana’s cultural strengths, including its historical heritage sites, music, fashion, cuisine, and growing creative industry, arguing that these assets remain underutilised in global branding efforts.

He calls for coordinated action involving the Ministry of Tourism, Ghana Tourism Authority, Ghana Football Association, media organisations, creative professionals, and the diaspora community to develop a unified national narrative during the tournament period.

His recommendations include structured cultural campaigns, digital storytelling, international media engagement, and active participation of Ghanaian artists and content creators in shaping the country’s global image during the World Cup window.

The World Cup has evolved beyond sport into a global cultural marketplace where nations compete for attention, investment, and influence. Ghana’s challenge lies not in the absence of cultural assets but in coordination and execution. A well-aligned branding strategy could convert short-term football attention into long-term tourism and economic benefits.
