Government Declines MTN Ghana’s GH¢20 Million Donation for Xenophobia Victims
Mahama administration says adequate funding has already been secured for evacuation and reintegration of Ghanaians returning from South Africa

The Government of Ghana has respectfully declined MTN Ghana’s GH¢20 million donation intended to support Ghanaian victims affected by the recent xenophobic attacks in South Africa.
In an official statement, the Mahama administration said sufficient financial arrangements have already been made to cater for the ongoing evacuation of stranded Ghanaians as well as their reintegration upon returning home.
According to the government, the decision was taken after assessing the resources currently available through state interventions and partnerships with local stakeholders involved in the emergency response.
Officials noted that the evacuation exercise is continuing, with affected Ghanaian nationals receiving transportation, temporary assistance and financial reintegration support to help them resettle after their return from South Africa.
The government expressed appreciation to MTN Ghana for its generosity and commitment to supporting Ghanaians during a humanitarian crisis, describing the telecommunications company’s gesture as a commendable act of corporate responsibility.
The xenophobic violence in South Africa has forced hundreds of African migrants, including Ghanaians, to seek assistance as authorities and governments work to ensure their safe return and protection.
While declining the donation, the Government of Ghana reaffirmed its commitment to providing comprehensive support for all affected citizens and thanked corporate organisations and development partners for standing in solidarity with Ghanaian communities abroad.
