The coin entered circulation on September 2, 2026, and is being distributed through banks and the U.S. Mint while also being sold in collectible rolls and bags for coin enthusiasts.
A landmark moment in U.S. currency
The newly issued dollar coin is legal tender, meaning Americans can use it for everyday purchases just like any other $1 coin. However, its release has generated nationwide debate because U.S. currency has traditionally avoided depicting living presidents on circulating money.
On the front of the coin is a portrait of President Trump alongside the inscriptions “Liberty,” “In God We Trust,” and the commemorative dates 1776–2026. The reverse features the Great Seal of the United States, with the iconic bald eagle clutching arrows and an olive branch.
Why the coin is controversial
The release has sparked constitutional and political discussions across the United States.
Critics argue that placing a sitting president on circulating currency breaks a long-standing democratic tradition designed to prevent the appearance of personality cults or political symbolism on national money. Although federal law generally discourages the use of living individuals on U.S. coins, the Trump administration maintains that the Treasury Secretary has the legal authority to authorize this special commemorative issue.
Supporters, meanwhile, describe the coin as a fitting tribute during America’s 250th birthday celebrations and point to historical precedents, including a 1926 commemorative coin that featured President Calvin Coolidge while he was still in office.
Not made of gold
Despite its gold appearance, the Trump dollar is not a gold coin. It is produced using the same gold-coloured manganese-brass alloy used in previous U.S. dollar coins, giving it the familiar golden finish without containing precious gold.

Collectors expected to drive demand
While the coin carries a face value of just one U.S. dollar, collectors are expected to preserve many of them rather than spend them. The U.S. Mint is selling specially packaged rolls and bags at prices above face value, targeting numismatists and commemorative coin buyers.

The release is one of the most significant currency events in recent U.S. history, blending politics, national symbolism and the celebration of America’s 250-year journey into a single piece of legal tender.
