Toronto police have identified the 17-year-old boy who was fatally shot in the Jane and Finch neighbourhood of North York, as investigators continue searching for those responsible for the daylight killing.
Officers were called to the area of Jane Street and Finch Avenue West shortly after 3:30 p.m. on Monday following reports of gunfire. When emergency crews arrived, they found the teenage victim suffering from gunshot wounds. He was rushed to hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
Police identify the victim
Authorities have now publicly identified the victim as a 17-year-old Toronto resident, while notifying his family of the tragic loss.
Police say the investigation remains in its early stages and are urging anyone who witnessed the shooting or has dashcam or surveillance footage from the area to come forward.
Investigators have not yet released information about a suspect or a possible motive.
Community shaken by daytime violence
The shooting occurred in the heart of the Jane and Finch community, a busy North York neighbourhood where residents say the incident has left families deeply concerned about youth violence.
The intersection of Jane Street and Finch Avenue West is surrounded by residential buildings, schools and businesses, making the afternoon shooting particularly alarming for people who were nearby at the time.
Police maintained a large crime scene for several hours as forensic officers collected evidence and interviewed witnesses.
Appeal for witnesses
Toronto police are asking anyone with information to contact homicide investigators or Crime Stoppers anonymously.
Authorities believe even small pieces of information, including cellphone videos or vehicle camera footage, could assist detectives in identifying those involved.
The investigation remains ongoing, and no arrests have been announced.
