Ghana international midfielder Thomas Teye Partey has officially completed his move to Saudi Pro League side Al-Shabab, bringing his latest spell in European football to an end.

The Saudi club confirmed the signing on Friday, August 21, 2026, welcoming the experienced midfielder through an announcement shared on its official social media platforms.

Partey joins Al-Shabab as a free agent after leaving Spanish side Villarreal, where he spent the 2025/26 season.

The move marks a significant new chapter in the 33-year-old’s career after more than a decade playing at the highest level of European football, including spells with Atlético Madrid, Arsenal and Villarreal.

From Villarreal to Saudi Arabia

Partey joined Villarreal in August 2025 on a free transfer after his contract with Arsenal came to an end.

During his single season with the Spanish club, the Ghanaian midfielder made 32 appearances, although injuries affected his involvement during the latter part of the campaign. Villarreal ultimately opted not to extend his contract when it expired.

His departure left Partey available to negotiate with clubs as a free agent, with Al-Shabab eventually securing his services.

Reports indicate that Partey has signed a one-year contract, keeping him at the Saudi club until June 2027.

The transfer gives the midfielder an opportunity to continue his professional career in one of football’s rapidly expanding leagues, while also bringing considerable experience to Al-Shabab’s midfield.

A career built in Spain and England

Partey’s move to Saudi Arabia comes after an accomplished European career.

He began his professional journey with Atlético Madrid after moving through the club’s youth system. He was sent on loan to Mallorca and Almería before establishing himself in Atlético’s first team.

Under Diego Simeone, Partey developed into one of the most respected defensive midfielders in European football.

His time in Madrid brought major honours, including the UEFA Europa League and UEFA Super Cup in 2018, while he was also part of Atlético’s run to the 2016 UEFA Champions League final.

In 2020, Arsenal paid around €50 million to bring him to the Premier League, making him one of the most significant Ghanaian transfers in European football.

At Arsenal, Partey became an important figure in midfield and made more than 100 appearances for the London club during his five-year spell.

He also won the FA Community Shield in 2023 with Arsenal.

What Partey brings to Al-Shabab

Partey’s arrival provides Al-Shabab with a midfielder who has considerable experience competing at the highest level.

His ability to operate as a defensive midfielder, control possession and provide defensive protection in front of the back four has been one of the defining characteristics of his career.

The Saudi club will also benefit from his experience in La Liga, the Premier League and European competitions.

For Partey, the move represents an opportunity to remain active at a competitive level while taking on a new footballing environment.

Al-Shabab have also been strengthening their squad with experienced international players, making Partey’s arrival part of a broader effort to build a competitive side in the Saudi Pro League.

A new chapter after 13 years in European football

The transfer effectively closes a major chapter in Partey’s career.

Since moving to Europe as a teenager, the midfielder has spent approximately 13 years playing professionally in Spain and England.

His European journey took him from Atlético Madrid’s youth setup to becoming a first-team player in La Liga, before a high-profile Premier League move to Arsenal.

His subsequent switch to Villarreal allowed him to return to Spanish football before he now makes the move to Saudi Arabia.

The transition also comes at a significant point in his career, with Partey now bringing his experience to a league that has attracted an increasing number of established international players.

What the move means for Ghana

Partey’s club future will also be closely followed in Ghana because of his importance to the Black Stars.

The midfielder has been one of Ghana’s most prominent players of the past decade and has represented the country at major international tournaments, including the 2017, 2019 and 2021 Africa Cup of Nations competitions and the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

His continued regular club football will therefore be important to Ghana as the national team prepares for future international assignments.

Partey’s experience remains particularly valuable to the Black Stars, who have relied on him for his leadership, defensive work and ability to influence matches from midfield.

Legal proceedings remain separate from football career

Partey’s move to Saudi Arabia also comes as he continues to face criminal proceedings in the United Kingdom.

He has been charged with seven counts of rape and two counts of sexual assault involving three women. Partey has denied the allegations and pleaded not guilty.

The legal proceedings are separate from his football career and remain before the British courts.

His transfer to Al-Shabab does not determine the outcome of those proceedings, which will ultimately be decided through the judicial process.

A fresh challenge in Saudi Arabia

For Partey, the immediate focus will now shift to adapting to life at Al-Shabab and competing in the Saudi Pro League.

The move offers him the chance to continue playing professionally while bringing his extensive experience to a club seeking to strengthen its squad.

After more than a decade in European football, including some of the biggest stages in the sport, Partey’s Saudi Arabian adventure represents a new phase of a career that has taken him from Ghana to the top levels of international football.

For Ghanaian football supporters, it will also provide another opportunity to watch one of the country’s most accomplished midfielders continue his career on the international stage.

Thomas Partey’s next chapter has officially begun — this time in Saudi Arabia, with Al-Shabab.
