Cybercrime is rapidly emerging as one of the most significant security threats in Ghana, according to anti-fraud expert Isaac Obour, who warns that increasing digitalization is exposing individuals and businesses to new risks.

Speaking on JoyNews, Mr. Obour explained that cybercrime encompasses both cyber-enabled crimes, such as fraud conducted online, and cyber-dependent crimes, including hacking and ransomware attacks.

He identified business email compromise (BEC) and online scams as major threats, noting that while Africa is often linked to global fraud networks, local populations are increasingly becoming victims themselves, particularly through mobile money and e-commerce platforms.

The rise of digital convenience, he noted, has created opportunities for fraudsters to exploit users through tactics such as phishing and social engineering.

He called for a comprehensive cybersecurity approach combining technical protections like encryption with user awareness practices, including multi-factor authentication.

Authorities have also urged victims to report cases promptly to support investigations and enforcement.

Technology has outpaced awareness. Ghana’s digital transformation is accelerating, but its cybersecurity culture is lagging behind. The real battlefield is not just technical, it is psychological. Until users become as sophisticated as the systems they use, cybercrime will continue to thrive in the gap between innovation and understanding.
