Ontario Crown Attorney Attacked During Dangerous Offender Hearing; Lack of Courtroom Barrier Called “Absolute Disgrace”

PETERBOROUGH, Ontario — A Crown attorney was assaulted by an accused person during a “dangerous offender” hearing at a courthouse in Peterborough, Ontario, highlighting long-standing safety concerns over courtroom design and security.

The incident occurred last week during a court session where a prosecutor was presenting legal arguments when the accused suddenly sprang from the prisoner’s box and physically attacked her, pinning her against a table.

What has drawn sharp criticism from legal professionals and safety advocates is not only the attack itself but the lack of a protective barrier between the accused in the dock and courtroom counsel. Unlike many courtrooms that separate defendants from prosecutors and judges with plexiglass or other shields, the space in this courtroom allowed the defendant to launch an unimpeded assault.

In coverage of the event, observers described the absence of proper physical safeguards as an “absolute disgrace,” considering that the Crown attorney had previously raised concerns about the safety risk posed by the courtroom layout.

Following the assault, a new prisoner box with a plexiglass barrier has begun to be installed in the courtroom to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Ontario Crown attorneys’ associations and legal safety advocates are now calling for province-wide courtroom security improvements, arguing that protective measures should not wait until after violent incidents occur.

The Crown attorney involved did not suffer life-threatening injuries, and authorities are reviewing the case for possible charges against the accused. Detailed reporting on the matter was published by the Toronto Star earlier today.
