FREDERICTON, N.B. — A speech in the New Brunswick Legislative Assembly went viral last month after Progressive Conservative MLA Bill Oliver appeared to accidentally read an AI chatbot’s editing instructions aloud on the legislature floor.
The moment happened during debate on a matter involving the Office of the New Brunswick Advocate. Oliver began with a standard line: “Public confidence in the office of an advocate matters,” before continuing with words no speechwriter would draft for public delivery.
“Here’s a more natural, flowing version of that section that reads like a legislative speech rather than a series of short points,” Oliver said, then carried on with the revised remarks as if nothing was amiss.
How the Clip Spread
The video passed largely unnoticed in the chamber but resurfaced this week after being posted to the New Brunswick subreddit. From there it spread to Threads, X, and YouTube, eventually picked up by CBC and other Canadian outlets.
The line is instantly recognizable to anyone who uses ChatGPT, Claude or similar tools — it’s the kind of framing text an AI model gives before rewriting content. Critics say it suggests Oliver, or a staffer, fed bullet points into a chatbot and pasted the output without deleting the prompt.
Public Reaction: Mockery and Questions
One Reddit user wrote: “So he asked someone to prepare him speech that someone didnt delete the prompt and the politician didnt read ‘his’ words beforehand. And this dude makes laws for you… amazing”.
Others were less harsh: “Bless. I almost sent a work email without deleting that part,” one commenter joked.
Some called for Oliver to resign, with one post calling it “a prime example of incompetence manifest”. The broader criticism wasn’t necessarily about using AI, but about preparation and accountability.
AI experts noted this isn’t the first such slip. In June 2024, Conservative MP Ryan Williams faced scrutiny after sharing ChatGPT-generated statistics that were incorrect. “In both cases, the failure was the same: no human review before publication”.
What It Says About AI in Politics
The incident has become a symbol of how quickly AI is entering political work — and the risks when it isn’t checked.
Clerks in other legislatures say there’s nothing wrong with using AI to refine writing, provided the views remain genuinely the politician’s own. The concern, they argue, is less about the tool and more about whether it’s producing someone’s own thinking. 5655
Oliver has not issued a public statement on the viral clip. The speech itself was about the dangers of creating advocacy offices, but that argument was largely overshadowed once the AI line circulated.
As provinces debate AI policy — Newfoundland and Labrador was close to tabling AI legislation before the 2025 election — Oliver’s slip is being held up as a cautionary tale: AI can help draft, but someone still has to hit delete before hitting send.
