In a groundbreaking move, the Kenyan government is gearing up to unleash a wave of affordable smartphones into the market, heralding a new era of digital inclusion for its citizens.
The Information Communication and Technology (ICT) Cabinet Secretary, Eliud Owalo, announced that the government has completed feasibility studies and is now prepared to embark on this transformative journey.
With an unwavering commitment to bridging the digital divide, Kenya aims to make smartphones accessible to every individual, irrespective of their economic status. Owalo stated, “We are very soon rolling out in the market our first batch of locally assembled smartphones,” expressing his enthusiasm for this game-changing initiative.
To ensure widespread affordability, the smartphones will be priced at a mere $40 (equivalent to approximately Sh. 5,516). This move is set to revolutionise the accessibility of government services, which have become increasingly digital-centric, allowing Kenyans from all walks of life to conveniently access these essential resources.
Recognising the hindrance posed by exorbitant smartphone costs, the Kenyan government has taken a decisive step by venturing into local smartphone production. Manufacturing these devices within the country effectively removes the barriers preventing many citizens from embracing the digital realm.
Kenya’s efforts are complemented by the extensive digital infrastructure already in place nationwide, making it imperative to provide affordable smartphones to maximise its potential. The distinguished Konza Technopolis in Machakos County has been chosen as the hub for assembling these low-cost smartphones, amplifying the local production ecosystem.
In a show of unity and collaborative spirit, the government is actively engaging with private sector stakeholders and manufacturers to ensure a seamless rollout of these transformative devices. This collective effort is poised to propel Kenya towards a future where digital inclusion knows no bounds.
The launch of digital laboratories at Maseno School, accompanied by esteemed figures such as Gem MP Elisha Odhiambo, Suba South MP Caroli Omondi, and former Kisumu Senator Fred Outa, exemplifies the government’s unwavering dedication to revolutionising digital education and paving the way for a digitally empowered nation.
With affordable smartphones on the horizon, Kenya is resolutely marching towards a future where no citizen is left behind in the digital revolution, fostering a society where opportunities and services are easily accessible to all.
