The Ghanaian community in the Bronx, New York, has been struck by another heartbreaking tragedy following reports that a 24-year-old Ghanaian man, identified as Joseph Owusu, has been found dead at a dumpsite after reportedly going missing for approximately two weeks.
The discovery has deepened concerns and grief among Ghanaians living in the United States, particularly in the Bronx, where the community is still mourning the recent killing of 15-year-old Ghanaian teenager Javits Badu Nkansah Frimpong.
According to reports circulating on November 3, Owusu’s body was discovered among refuse at a dumpsite by a scrap collector.
Details surrounding the circumstances of his disappearance, the discovery of his body and the cause of death remain unclear.
The reports available at the time of publication have not established whether his death involved criminal activity, and no official police account detailing the circumstances has been confirmed.
Joseph Owusu remembered as church organist
Beyond the tragic circumstances surrounding his reported death, Owusu is being remembered by members of his community as a young man who made a positive impression through his personality, kindness and involvement in church activities.
He was reportedly a member of the Ghana United Methodist Church in the Bronx, where he served as an organist.
A tribute shared online by an individual identified as Stiry Bee described him as a caring person who was always willing to support others and whose presence brought warmth to the people around him.
The tribute highlighted his love for spending time with family and friends, as well as his commitment to his church and the relationships he built within his community.
It also recalled his willingness to offer a listening ear, show kindness and be present for people who needed support.

His musical contribution to the church was among the qualities highlighted in the tribute, with friends and loved ones reflecting on the memories he leaves behind.
Another painful loss for Ghanaians in the Bronx
The news of Owusu’s reported death comes just days after another tragedy involving a young Ghanaian in the same New York borough.
On Thursday, October 29, 2026, 15-year-old Javits Badu Nkansah Frimpong was fatally shot while walking to school in the Bronx.
The teenager had reportedly moved from Ghana to the United States about a year earlier to live with his father, Thomas Frimpong.
His killing attracted widespread attention among Ghanaians in the United States and back home, prompting calls for justice and a thorough investigation.
Ghana’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, subsequently expressed the government’s condolences to the family and assured them that Ghana would work with American authorities to pursue justice.
Officials from Ghana’s Permanent Mission in New York also visited the bereaved family, while the government pledged consular and appropriate legal assistance.
The two incidents, occurring within a short period, have added to the sadness being experienced by members of the Ghanaian community in New York.
However, there is currently no established evidence linking Owusu’s reported death to the killing of Javits Frimpong.
Questions remain over circumstances of his death
While tributes continue to emerge for the 24-year-old, important questions remain unanswered.
It is not yet clear what led to Owusu’s disappearance, how his body ended up at the dumpsite or whether authorities have established the circumstances surrounding his death.
Confirmation from the relevant law enforcement authorities will be important in providing clarity to his family, friends and the wider Ghanaian community.
For now, the focus remains on remembering a young Ghanaian whose life has reportedly been cut short and supporting those mourning his loss.
As the community awaits further details, condolences continue to go out to his family, church congregation, friends and loved ones in Ghana and the United States.
May his soul rest in peace.
