GRIDCo traces nationwide power disruption to fault on Akosombo–Volta transmission corridor

A technical fault on the Akosombo–Volta transmission line has been identified as the trigger for the widespread power interruption that affected several parts of Ghana in the early hours of Thursday, August 20.

The Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) said the fault occurred at about 4:30 a.m., causing the protection system to automatically shut down the Akosombo generating units as well as some thermal plants connected to the national grid.

According to the company, the automatic shutdown was necessary to protect the wider transmission network from further instability.

The disruption consequently affected electricity supply to several communities, including parts of Accra and other regions.

GRIDCo said technical teams were immediately deployed to isolate the affected section of the transmission network and begin restoration procedures.

Some affected areas had reportedly regained power as engineers worked to reconnect the remaining customers in a controlled manner.

The company said the restoration process was being undertaken with the involvement of other power-sector institutions, with the objective of returning the national system to normal operation as quickly and safely as possible.

GRIDCo has apologised to consumers for the disruption and appealed for patience while restoration works continue.

Commentary

The latest incident once again raises questions about the resilience of Ghana’s transmission infrastructure. While GRIDCo’s explanation points to a specific technical fault rather than an unexplained system-wide failure, repeated large-scale outages inevitably bring renewed attention to the condition, maintenance and redundancy of critical power infrastructure.

For households and businesses, the immediate concern is restoration.
