A Ghanaian peacekeeper serving under the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) is recovering after sustaining serious injuries in a missile attack on a UN base amid escalating hostilities between Israel and the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah.

The United Nations confirmed that Lance Corporal Albert Abrefa Busia of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) is responding positively to treatment after undergoing a successful surgical operation.

The soldier was among four peacekeepers injured when the Ghanaian Battalion Headquarters in Lebanon came under missile attack on Friday, March 6, during intense exchanges of fire between the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and Hezbollah fighters.

According to the Ghana Armed Forces, two missiles struck the base between 17:45 and 17:52 local time, causing serious injuries to some personnel and trauma to others stationed at the facility.

In an update issued by the Ministry of Defence on March 7, officials confirmed that the injured soldiers are now stable and recovering, following immediate medical attention.

The most seriously wounded soldier, who suffered severe injuries to both legs and the hip, was quickly evacuated to Beirut, where he underwent surgery on Saturday morning. Medical authorities say he is currently stable and recuperating well.

United Nations officials who visited the injured peacekeeper expressed relief over his improving condition and praised the medical teams handling the situation.

“Great to learn that Lance Corporal Albert Abrefa Busia of Ghana, one of the peacekeepers serving with UNIFIL who was recently injured during a missile attack, is recovering,” the UN said in a statement.

The UN has once again stressed that peacekeeping personnel should never be targets in armed conflicts, renewing its global advocacy under the campaign message #NotATarget.

Rising Risks for Peacekeepers

The attack underscores the increasing dangers faced by international peacekeeping forces stationed in volatile regions where active conflicts persist. UNIFIL troops, including Ghanaian soldiers, have long been deployed to help monitor ceasefires and maintain stability along the Israel-Lebanon border.

Ghana remains one of the largest and most respected contributors to United Nations peacekeeping missions worldwide, with its troops serving in several conflict zones across Africa and the Middle East.

Commentary:

 The Courage of Ghana’s Peacekeepers

This incident highlights the extraordinary sacrifices Ghanaian soldiers continue to make on the global stage. Often deployed far from home, they serve in dangerous environments to uphold international peace and stability.

While their work rarely makes headlines unless tragedy strikes, the bravery of these peacekeepers reflects Ghana’s longstanding commitment to global diplomacy, humanitarian protection, and conflict resolution.

The injury of Lance Corporal Busia also raises broader questions about the safety of peacekeeping missions in modern warfare, where missile technology and asymmetric conflicts increasingly blur the lines between combat zones and supposedly protected installations.

For many Ghanaians, the soldier’s survival is a moment of relief and national pride, but it also serves as a reminder of the risks borne by those who wear the uniform in service to both country and humanity.

As the region remains tense, the international community continues to call for restraint and respect for peacekeeping forces operating in conflict zones.

🇬🇭 Ghana’s peacekeepers remain a symbol of courage, discipline, and dedication to global peace.
