Ghana Rejects Fake Cambodia Deportation Notice Circulating Online

Ghana’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has dismissed as fake a widely circulated notice claiming that African nationals in Cambodia had been ordered to leave the country or face arrest and imprisonment.

According to the ministry, the document falsely alleged that citizens from countries including Ghana, Kenya, Cameroon and Uganda were being threatened with deportation over immigration violations.

“The Ministry wishes to assure the public that following diplomatic engagements with the relevant Cambodian authorities, it has been confirmed that the said notice is absolutely fake and was not issued by any state institution in Cambodia,” the ministry stated.

Cambodia’s General Department of Immigration reportedly confirmed that the document was “completely untrue.”

The ministry therefore urged the public and media organisations to avoid sharing unverified information capable of causing panic among Ghanaians abroad and their relatives at home.

Despite dismissing the notice, the ministry disclosed that 85 Ghanaians had already been assisted to return home from Cambodia between March and May 2026 through Ghana’s High Commission in Malaysia.

Authorities also confirmed that arrangements are underway to facilitate the return of an additional 76 Ghanaian nationals who have expressed interest in voluntary evacuation.

“The Government of Ghana reiterates its commitment to safeguarding the interests of Ghanaian nationals,” the ministry added.

The incident demonstrates how quickly misinformation can spread across digital platforms and trigger fear among migrant communities. It also reveals the increasing diplomatic responsibilities governments face in monitoring the welfare of citizens abroad. The ministry’s response appears aimed not only at correcting false claims but also at reassuring families concerned about the safety of relatives overseas.
