NEW YORK, USA — President John Dramani Mahama has taken Ghana’s investment message to one of the world’s most influential financial institutions, the Nasdaq Stock Market in New York, as part of his engagements during the 80th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).

The visit was aimed at promoting Ghana as a destination for international investment, encouraging global companies and financial institutions to explore business opportunities in the West African nation.

What is Nasdaq?

Nasdaq is one of the largest stock exchanges in the world, providing a marketplace where companies raise capital by offering shares to investors. Global technology giants including Apple, Microsoft, Nvidia, Amazon and Meta are among the companies whose shares are traded on the exchange.

Unlike an ordinary marketplace where goods are bought and sold, a stock exchange allows investors to purchase ownership stakes in companies. Anyone who buys shares in a listed company becomes a shareholder, meaning they own a small portion of that business.

Why Mahama’s Visit Matters

President Mahama’s appearance at Nasdaq was not about selling Ghana or entering into a commercial agreement with the exchange itself. Instead, it was about presenting Ghana to the global investment community and building confidence among international investors.

During the visit, Mahama participated in meetings with business executives and investors and also took part in the symbolic Nasdaq Closing Bell ceremony — an honour frequently extended to world leaders, major corporations and institutions.

The Ghanaian delegation also used the occasion to highlight investment opportunities in infrastructure, energy, agriculture, technology and manufacturing, sectors the government believes can drive economic growth and job creation.

Understanding the Bigger Picture

Economists often describe foreign investment as a partnership rather than aid. Instead of simply lending money to governments, investors finance businesses, factories, technology projects and infrastructure in exchange for potential returns on their investments.

By engaging investors at Nasdaq and the Ghana–US Business Summit, the Mahama administration is seeking to position Ghana as an attractive and stable destination for global capital.

A Signal to International Markets

As competition for foreign investment intensifies across Africa, Ghana’s presence at Nasdaq sends a message that the country is open for business and ready to strengthen partnerships with international companies looking to expand into the African market.

While the visit itself does not automatically translate into investment deals, it represents an important opportunity to showcase Ghana’s economic potential before some of the world’s largest financial institutions and private investors.
