The Government of Ghana has reportedly declined a proposed state visit by South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, as diplomatic tensions rise over the recent wave of xenophobic attacks that have targeted foreign nationals, including Ghanaians, in parts of South Africa.
The decision comes at a time of heightened concern following violent anti-immigrant protests that have left several people dead, displaced businesses and reignited fears among African migrant communities. The death of a Ghanaian citizen during the unrest has further intensified calls for stronger diplomatic action from Accra.
Diplomatic Message
Government sources indicate that Ghana’s decision reflects the seriousness with which authorities are treating the safety of Ghanaian citizens living and working in South Africa.
Rather than proceeding with a high-profile state visit, officials are said to be prioritising urgent diplomatic engagement aimed at ensuring accountability, protecting Ghanaian nationals and seeking concrete measures to prevent further attacks.
The move signals Ghana’s determination to place the welfare of its citizens at the centre of its foreign policy.
Xenophobic Violence Sparks Outrage
The latest unrest erupted during protests against illegal immigration in several South African communities, with foreign-owned businesses attacked and migrants becoming targets of violence.
Although South African authorities have pledged to restore order, images and reports circulating across social media have generated widespread condemnation throughout Africa.
Many Ghanaians both at home and abroad have demanded stronger action against recurring xenophobic violence, noting that similar attacks have occurred several times over the past two decades.
Ghana Calls for Protection of Its Citizens
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has already been engaging South African authorities while Ghana’s diplomatic mission continues to monitor the welfare of citizens in affected areas.
Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has strongly condemned the killing of the Ghanaian national and called for a thorough investigation, urging South African authorities to bring those responsible to justice while ensuring the safety of all Ghanaians residing in the country.
Government officials have also encouraged Ghanaians in South Africa to remain vigilant and maintain close contact with Ghana’s High Commission should they require assistance.
Impact on Ghana–South Africa Relations
Ghana and South Africa have long maintained strong diplomatic, economic and educational ties, with thousands of Ghanaians living, studying and doing business in South Africa.
However, recurring xenophobic violence continues to cast a shadow over that relationship, raising difficult questions about the security of African migrants within the continent.
Political observers believe Ghana’s reported decision to postpone or decline the state visit sends a clear diplomatic message that bilateral relations cannot be separated from the protection of citizens abroad.
Calls for African Unity
Across the continent, leaders, civil society organisations and members of the African diaspora have renewed calls for greater solidarity among African nations.
Many argue that the vision of continental integration under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) and the African Union can only succeed if Africans are able to live, work and travel safely across borders without fear of discrimination or violence.
As investigations into the recent attacks continue, attention will remain focused on the steps South African authorities take to restore confidence, prosecute perpetrators and reassure foreign communities that such violence will not be tolerated.
