A massive wildfire has forced French authorities to order the full evacuation of the Cap Ferret peninsula, one of France’s most popular summer holiday destinations, as firefighters battle to contain a fast-moving blaze fueled by extreme heat, dry conditions and strong winds.
The evacuation order affects tens of thousands of residents and tourists on the narrow Atlantic peninsula near Bordeaux. Authorities have moved people to safety by both road and boat as flames continue to advance through pine forests and threaten homes and campsites.
Officials say the wildfire has already scorched thousands of hectares of land, making it one of the most serious fires France has faced this summer. Hundreds of firefighters, supported by water-bombing aircraft, remain on the front lines as emergency crews work to prevent the fire from spreading further.
French President Emmanuel Macron has activated the European Union’s Civil Protection Mechanism, requesting additional firefighting assistance from neighboring countries as the scale of the disaster continues to grow.
