FBI RAID ON GHANA SCAM NETWORK UNCOVERS $10M IN ALLEGED LOSSES, 130+ DETAINED

8 OCTOBER 2026

By Boakye Stephen, Kumasi, Ghana | Reporting for Ghanaian News Canada

More than 130 people have been arrested or detained in Ghana as the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) intensifies its international crackdown on organised scam networks accused of targeting Americans.

FBI Director Kash Patel said the Ghana operation had so far uncovered nearly US$10 million in alleged losses involving 89 victims, with investigators also seizing more than 300 electronic devices.

The operation is part of the FBI’s broader Operation Blackout, which targets transnational scam compounds and fraud networks operating across borders.

“These scam compounds target American citizens and destroy lives – and this FBI is crushing them in every corner of the world. More to come,” Patel said in a post on X.

The FBI has not disclosed the identities of those detained, the exact locations of the alleged operations or which Ghanaian agencies participated in the action.

Patel also indicated that not everyone detained is necessarily a suspect. Some, he said, are believed to be victims of trafficking who will be repatriated to their respective countries.

It remains unclear whether any of the suspects will be prosecuted in Ghana or transferred to the United States to face possible charges.

The development comes as US and Ghanaian authorities deepen cooperation against cyber-enabled fraud and other forms of transnational organised crime. In July, Ghanaian national Frederick Kumi, also known as Abu Trica, was extradited to the United States over alleged involvement in a romance-fraud network.

US prosecutors accuse Kumi of participating in a scheme that allegedly targeted more than 80 elderly Americans and caused losses exceeding US$8 million. His arrest in Ghana in December 2025 involved cooperation between several Ghanaian security and law-enforcement institutions.

The FBI says its wider campaign has also involved the seizure of billions of dollars in fraud-related assets, arrests and the rescue of people allegedly forced to work in scam compounds. Its prevention programme, Operation Level Up, has also reportedly helped stop potential victims from losing large sums of money.

COMMENTARY

The Ghana operation highlights how online fraud has increasingly become an international security and financial issue rather than a crime confined to one country.

The reported US$10 million in losses and the involvement of 89 victims show the potential scale of the alleged network. However, the identities and legal status of those detained remain undisclosed, while some detainees are reportedly trafficking victims rather than perpetrators.

For Ghana, the case also underscores the importance of stronger cooperation between local institutions and international law-enforcement agencies in tackling cybercrime, human trafficking and cross-border financial fraud.

The next stage will be significant: authorities will need to establish who allegedly organised the operations, who participated in fraud, who were victims of coercion and what legal action will follow.
