Chief of Staff Julius Debrah has revealed a little-known story about how his relationship with former Ghanaian President John Agyekum Kufuor began many years before both men rose to prominence in national politics.
Speaking during a public event in Accra, Debrah explained that his connection with the former president dates back to his days as a student at Achimota School, where he developed a close relationship with the Kufuor family.
According to him, the bond formed during those early years has remained strong and serves as an example of how relationships built in youth can influence one’s life journey.
The Achimota School Connection
Debrah narrated that while he was a sixth-form student at Achimota School, he served as a “school father” to one of Kufuor’s sons, Kofi Kufuor.
In many Ghanaian boarding schools, a school father acts as a senior mentor responsible for guiding younger students.
Debrah recalled that the younger Kufuor often kept his food in his cubicle and relied on him for support and advice during their time in school.
At that time, Debrah said neither of them could have imagined that their lives would later intersect in Ghana’s political leadership.

A Relationship That Continued Beyond School
After their school years, Debrah explained that his connection with the Kufuor family continued.
He revealed that former President Kufuor frequently welcomed him to his residence and offered guidance and encouragement as he navigated life and eventually entered politics.
Reflecting on those moments, Debrah said the kindness shown to him during his youth had a lasting impact on his life.
He even noted that the young student who once received small financial gifts and advice from the Kufuor family had eventually grown to become Chief of Staff at the Presidency.
Message on Unity and Relationships
Debrah used the story to emphasise the importance of building and maintaining genuine relationships regardless of political differences.
According to him, political affiliations should not destroy friendships or human connections.
He argued that Ghana’s development depends not only on policies and institutions but also on strong interpersonal relationships built on mutual respect and understanding.
Debrah encouraged Ghanaians to promote unity and brotherliness across political lines, noting that cooperation among citizens and leaders is essential for national progress.
The Event Where the Story Was Shared
The Chief of Staff shared the story during the Accra Friendship Forever Club dinner, where he spoke about the value of friendship, mentorship and national unity.
His remarks attracted attention because they highlighted a rare example of a close personal connection between individuals associated with different political traditions.
The story also served as a reminder that relationships built during school years can sometimes shape the future paths of national leaders.
A Lesson for the Younger Generation
Debrah concluded by encouraging young people to cultivate positive friendships and treat others with respect, as they never know how those relationships might influence their future.
He noted that the friendship he built during his school days eventually connected him to one of Ghana’s most influential political families and played a role in shaping his journey into public service.
For many observers, the story illustrates how shared experiences and mentorship can build lifelong bonds that transcend politics and time.
