MEDELLÍN, Colombia — In a cinematic raid that shattered the routine of a luxury shopping mall, heavily armed Colombian security forces have apprehended a major Canadian fugitive. Arif Jhuman, a 36-year-old Canadian citizen who had eluded international law enforcement for over three years, was captured while working out at a commercial gym in the upscale El Tesoro neighborhood of Medellín.

Video footage shared online by Colombia’s Defence Minister, Pedro Arnulfo Sánchez, detailed the precise moment elite tactical units breached the fitness facility. Jhuman, who went by the alias “Gillani,” was caught entirely off guard mid-workout, restrained, and escorted from the building in handcuffs.

A Transnational Criminal Network

According to international intelligence reports, Jhuman was the subject of an Interpol Red Notice and was highly sought after by federal authorities in both Canada and the United States.

U.S. federal prosecutors link Jhuman to a sophisticated cross-border criminal organization specializing in firearm trafficking and narcotics distribution. U.S. authorities allege that Jhuman helped coordinate a massive gun-smuggling ring, utilizing illicit funds to purchase more than 100 firearms in Florida. These weapons were then illegally trafficked across the border into Canada, where their black-market value skyrocketed.

In his home country, Jhuman was already a convicted criminal. In April 2023, Ontario’s Repeat Offender Parole Enforcement (R.O.P.E.) Squad issued a Canada-wide warrant for his arrest. He had breached the conditions of his parole while serving a sentence of nine years and eleven months for high-level drug trafficking charges.

The Illusion of a Safe Haven

It remains unclear exactly when Jhuman fled North America, but Colombian authorities revealed that he managed to slip into South America using high-quality counterfeit identification documents. Once in Colombia, he attempted to blend into the vibrant, cosmopolitan city of Medellín while quietly maintaining his ties to transnational syndicates.

However, Jhuman’s preference for high-end public spaces ultimately led to his downfall. A joint operation between Colombia’s Anti-Narcotics Police, the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), and local intelligence trackers successfully closed in on his daily fitness routine.

Following the high-profile arrest, Medellín Mayor Fico Gutiérrez issued a stern public warning on social media platform X, stating unequivocally, “Medellín is not a refuge for criminals.”

Extradition Looming

With Jhuman securely in Colombian custody, the focus now shifts to legal proceedings. Given the severity of his active U.S. federal indictments regarding weapon conspiracies and his outstanding near-decade prison sentence in Canada, a complex multi-jurisdictional extradition process is expected to begin immediately.

Jhuman’s dramatic arrest stands as a testament to growing international police cooperation, sending a clear message to fugitives who believe they can safely hide within South America’s major commercial hubs.
