The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has strongly condemned the “unacceptable behaviour” displayed by some players and officials during the dramatic Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025 final between Morocco and Senegal in Rabat and announced a full review of the incidents with possible disciplinary action to follow.
In an official statement released on January 19, 2026, CAF said that it “strongly condemns any inappropriate behaviour which occurs during matches, especially those targeting the refereeing team or match organizers,” and confirmed it is reviewing all available video footage from the match to identify individuals who may face sanctions.
The final, played at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium, was overshadowed by controversy after a late penalty was awarded to hosts Morocco following a VAR review. The decision sparked protests from Senegal’s players and officials, with many temporarily walking off the pitch in protest before eventually returning to complete the match.
Senegal went on to win the title with a stunning extra-time goal by Pape Gueye, securing their second AFCON crown. However, the delay and protests, coupled with clashes involving fans and officials around the stadium, have drawn sharp criticism from football authorities.
CAF’s statement made clear that the governing body is committed to upholding the integrity of African football and will refer incidents of misconduct during the final to the relevant disciplinary committees for review and action.
The fallout has drawn attention beyond the continent. FIFA President Gianni Infantino also condemned the chaotic scenes, describing the conduct of some players, staff and supporters as “unacceptable” and emphasising that respect for referees and officials is fundamental to the sport.
Reports suggest that disciplinary sanctions could range from fines to suspensions for individuals found responsible, including possible action against members of Senegal’s team and staff who took part in the protest walk-off.
The controversy has also sparked responses from Morocco, where officials have hinted at exploring legal options with CAF and FIFA, arguing that the late match interruption unfairly affected the competition’s integrity.
As CAF’s disciplinary review continues, the football world remains focused on the outcome, with stakeholders urging clear consequences to protect the spirit of fair play in African football.
