British Columbia Premier David Eby has arrived at Government House in Victoria as speculation continues that he could call an early provincial election.

Eby’s visit comes after days of heightened political discussion surrounding the possibility of a snap vote, less than two years after British Columbians last went to the polls.

The province’s next scheduled general election is currently set for October 21, 2028. However, Elections BC notes that an earlier election can take place if the government decides to call one or if it loses the confidence of the Legislative Assembly.

Growing speculation over an early vote

The possibility of an early election has attracted considerable attention in recent days.

Eby previously indicated that he had told Elections BC and members of his caucus to be prepared for an election, citing uncertainty and disruptions associated with the ongoing U.S. trade situation.

The speculation has also emerged while British Columbia is preparing for municipal elections, creating the possibility that provincial and local campaigns could overlap.

The Union of British Columbia Municipalities has expressed concern about such an overlap. Its president, Cori Ramsay, argued that separate campaign periods allow voters to properly consider local and provincial issues.

Opposition raises concerns

The possibility of a snap election has also become a major issue for the opposition.

B.C. Conservative leader Kerry-Lynne Findlay has criticized the prospect of an early vote, describing it as a political move while her party faces internal changes.

The Conservative caucus has experienced several defections in recent weeks, adding another layer to the political uncertainty surrounding the legislature.

The Conservatives have also been preparing for a September 26 byelection in Abbotsford-Mission, making the timing of any potential provincial election particularly significant for the opposition.

What happens next?

Eby’s arrival at Government House is significant because the lieutenant governor plays a formal constitutional role in the process of calling a provincial election.

However, his presence at Government House by itself does not establish that an election has been called.

If an early election is formally called, Elections BC would publish the election calendar and voting dates. The agency has already prepared possible calendars for a fall 2026 election scenario.

For now, the political focus remains on whether Eby will formally seek an early dissolution of the legislature.

Any decision would come less than two years after the 2024 provincial election and could reshape the political landscape in British Columbia well before the previously scheduled 2028 vote.
