A suspected armed robber has died following a dramatic taxi hijacking incident in La, Accra, that left residents shaken and has triggered an ongoing police investigation.
The deceased, known locally only as “Mugu,” allegedly confronted a taxi driver near the La Girls’ School area on Saturday, June 13, before seizing the vehicle at gunpoint.
Eyewitnesses reported hearing a gunshot during the incident, causing panic among nearby residents and motorists.
“The sound of the gunshot frightened everyone. People immediately ran for cover because they feared the suspect might fire again,” a resident told local observers.
The suspect allegedly escaped in the stolen Daewoo Matiz taxi but later crashed the vehicle under circumstances yet to be fully established.
Following the crash, the suspect was reportedly found suffering from a gunshot wound. It remains unclear whether the injury occurred before, during, or after the collision.
Police later transported the body to the Police Hospital mortuary while investigations continue.
Authorities have yet to release an official account explaining how the suspect sustained the fatal injury.
