Former Ghanaian President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has been appointed by the Economic Community of West African States to lead its Electoral Observation Mission to Benin ahead of the country’s upcoming presidential elections, the regional bloc announced.
The mission, scheduled to take place from April 7 to April 15, will deploy observers across key regions in Benin to monitor the electoral process, assess compliance with democratic standards, and support efforts aimed at ensuring a peaceful and credible vote.
ECOWAS said the appointment reflects confidence in Akufo-Addo’s experience in governance and regional diplomacy, as well as his longstanding advocacy for democratic principles within West Africa. The former leader is expected to engage with electoral authorities, political stakeholders, civil society groups, and security agencies throughout the mission.
The observation exercise comes at a time when parts of West Africa are grappling with political instability, military interventions, and growing concerns over electoral integrity. Analysts say the role of ECOWAS election missions has become increasingly significant in reinforcing democratic norms and preventing post-election conflicts.
Akufo-Addo, who served as Ghana’s president from 2017 to 2025, has previously played active roles in regional mediation and governance initiatives. His leadership of the Benin mission is expected to lend credibility to the process and reassure both domestic and international stakeholders.
Benin’s presidential election is seen as a key test for democratic resilience in the region. Authorities in the country have pledged to conduct a transparent and inclusive process, while opposition groups and observers continue to call for fairness and accountability.
ECOWAS typically deploys short-term and long-term observers during elections in member states, issuing recommendations aimed at strengthening electoral systems and democratic institutions.
