2023 AFCON: My first AFCON didn’t go as planned- Mohammed Kudus

Ghana and West Ham United midfielder Mohammed Kudus has bemoaned his debut experience competing in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

He did this during his interview with British media outlet The Guardian following Ghana’s second-worst campaign in the history of the competition.

Ghana’s Black Stars played three games and failed to win any and recorded just two points to crash out at the preliminary stage.

Kudus played two games in the tournament held in Cote D’Ivoire due to an injury he picked up before the competition and scored twice against Egypt after missing Ghana’s 2-1 loss to Cape Verde in the opening round.

After missing the 2021 AFCON in Cameroon also through injury, seeing his first-ever AFCON run end so early left the former Ajax Amsterdam player disappointed.

“As human beings we need some time to shake stuff off. I was injured before Afcon and had to put all my effort into being there to help the team. It was my first Afcon and it didn’t go as planned. It had an impact because it was a big disappointment.”

Kudus is in line to feature in West Ham’s league game against Newcastle at St. James’ Park on Saturday, March 30 at 12:30 GMT.
