The Ghana Police Service has launched an investigation into a shooting incident involving former Dome-Kwabenya Member of Parliament, Sarah Adwoa Safo, who reportedly sustained a gunshot injury while visiting her late father’s residence in Kwabenya.

According to a statement issued by the police, the Madina Divisional Police Command is currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident, which occurred on Sunday.

Preliminary information released by the police indicates that Adwoa Safo suffered a gunshot wound to her left ear during the incident. She subsequently reported the matter to the Kwabenya Police and presented a vehicle bearing registration number GN 3482-24, which had visible gunshot damage. The vehicle has since been retained by investigators for forensic examination.

Police officials confirmed that the former Gender, Children and Social Protection Minister has been issued a medical report form and is receiving treatment. Investigators have not yet disclosed any suspects or established a motive for the shooting as inquiries continue.

Meanwhile, the incident has taken a dramatic turn following claims by lawyer for the Kristo Asafo Church, Nana Kofi Kantanka, who alleged that Adwoa Safo fired the first shot during a confrontation linked to a church leadership event.

Speaking on JoyNews, the lawyer claimed that the former legislator allegedly attempted to force her way into the premises where the introduction of the church’s newly appointed leader to the General Council was taking place. According to him, private security personnel fired warning shots after perceiving a threat to the safety of those gathered at the venue.

Kantanka further denied reports that Adwoa Safo had been prevented from entering the event, insisting that she would have been granted access had she followed normal procedures. However, he said he could not independently confirm whether she had sustained gunshot injuries.

The incident is believed to be connected to the ongoing succession dispute within the Kristo Asafo movement following the death of its founder, Apostle Kwadwo Safo Kantanka, who was also Adwoa Safo’s father. The dispute over leadership succession has generated significant public interest in recent months.

Police say investigations remain ongoing and have assured the public that all circumstances surrounding the shooting will be thoroughly examined.
