Black Stars captain Andre Ayew has been excluded from the 26-man squad for the crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Mali and the Central African Republic next month.
The announcement was made by head coach Otto Addo during a press briefing on Wednesday, 29 May 2024.
Coach Addo revealed that he had a detailed conversation with Ayew, Ghana’s record appearance holder, before making the decision, though he chose not to disclose the specifics of their discussion.
“I had a long chat with Andre and gave him the reason why he is not in the squad. I talk to players directly and I don’t like to put information out about what we spoke about. This is the decision we took and it’s not like he necessarily agreed, but I still have big respect for him,” Coach Addo stated.
Ayew, 34, has been in decent form this season, scoring five goals in 19 league appearances for French Ligue 1 side Le Havre.
Despite his contributions, Addo decided to leave the veteran forward out of the squad.
Ghana is currently fourth in their qualifying group with three points.
The Black Stars will face Mali in Bamako on Thursday, 6 June 2024 before hosting the Central African Republic in Kumasi on Monday, 10 June 2024.
