A major controversy has emerged ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after Somali referee Omar Abdulkadir Artan was denied entry into the United States, preventing him from officiating at football’s biggest tournament.
Artan, widely regarded as one of Africa’s top referees, was set to make history as the first Somali official to referee at a FIFA World Cup. However, upon arriving at Miami International Airport, he was stopped by U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials and later denied entry into the country. Authorities cited “vetting concerns” but did not publicly provide detailed information regarding the decision.
The decision means Artan will not take part in the tournament, which is being jointly hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico. FIFA confirmed that he would neither attend training sessions nor officiate matches during the competition.
Artan’s exclusion has generated strong reactions in Somalia and across the African football community. The referee was recognized as Africa’s Best Referee in 2025 and had previously officiated major continental competitions, including the Africa Cup of Nations and CAF Champions League matches. His selection for the World Cup had been celebrated as a milestone achievement for Somali football.
Somali government officials expressed disappointment over the development, arguing that Artan had earned his place at the World Cup through professionalism, dedication, and years of hard work. Supporters gathered in large numbers to welcome him home, praising him as a national inspiration despite the setback.
Speaking after returning to Somalia, Artan thanked FIFA, the Confederation of African Football, and supporters around the world for standing by him. He encouraged young Somalis to continue pursuing their dreams and insisted that the incident would not define his career.
The controversy comes as the United States faces increased scrutiny over immigration and travel policies ahead of the World Cup. Critics argue that such incidents risk overshadowing the spirit of inclusivity that FIFA promotes, while U.S. officials maintain that all travelers are subject to security screening and admissibility reviews under American law.
