Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has challenged the financial management of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod), arguing that an institution engaged in gold trading should not be recording losses.
Speaking at a Minority press conference in Parliament, he attributed what he described as losses to management and policy failures rather than unfavourable market conditions.
GoldBod CEO Sammy Gyamfi, however, has rejected the allegations, insisting that the institution’s audited 2025 financial statements show an operational surplus of GH¢907 million and an overall surplus of GH¢5.4 billion.
Mr Gyamfi described the Minority’s claims as false and challenged the interpretation of GoldBod’s financial position.
The disagreement has intensified calls for greater public scrutiny of GoldBod’s accounts and the management of Ghana’s gold resources.
COMMENTARY
The critical issue here is not who shouts the loudest but what the audited figures actually show. Parliament, financial experts and the public should demand the relevant financial statements, examine the accounting treatment and distinguish between trading losses, operational results, valuation movements and overall institutional surplus. Ghana’s gold resources are too important for their management to become merely another partisan dispute.
