Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has revealed that the opening of the long-awaited Gordie Howe International Bridge has been delayed at the request of the United States, seeking to reassure businesses and the public that the postponement is not linked to any major issues with the project.

Speaking to reporters, Carney said American authorities requested additional time to complete final operational and border-readiness preparations before the crossing officially opens to traffic.

“There is no big drama here,” Carney said, emphasizing that the bridge itself is substantially complete and that both countries remain committed to ensuring a smooth and secure launch of one of North America’s most significant infrastructure projects.

The Gordie Howe International Bridge, which spans the Detroit River between Windsor, Ontario, and Detroit, Michigan, is expected to become a critical trade and transportation corridor linking Canada and the United States. The project has been years in the making and represents one of the largest cross-border infrastructure investments in North American history.

According to Carney, the delay is primarily related to final preparations involving customs operations, border security systems, staffing, and coordination between Canadian and American agencies responsible for managing the crossing.

Officials on both sides of the border have stressed the importance of ensuring that all inspection facilities, technology systems, and operational procedures are fully functional before opening the bridge to commercial and passenger traffic.

The bridge is expected to ease congestion at existing border crossings, particularly the Ambassador Bridge, which currently handles a significant portion of trade between Canada and the United States. Industry leaders have long viewed the project as essential to improving supply-chain efficiency and supporting economic growth in both countries.

The Windsor-Detroit corridor serves as one of the busiest commercial gateways in North America, facilitating hundreds of billions of dollars in trade annually. The automotive industry, in particular, relies heavily on the movement of parts and finished vehicles across the border.

Business groups have generally welcomed assurances from both governments that the delay is temporary and procedural rather than structural. Analysts note that large infrastructure projects frequently experience final scheduling adjustments as governments complete regulatory and operational requirements.

The bridge is named after Canadian hockey legend Gordie Howe and features a six-lane cable-stayed design that will provide a modern alternative for cross-border transportation. Once operational, it is expected to enhance trade resilience and create additional capacity for future economic growth.

Despite the revised timeline, Canadian officials maintain that the project remains a major success story in bilateral cooperation between Ottawa and Washington. Carney reiterated that both governments are working closely to finalize preparations and bring the crossing into service as soon as possible.

For businesses, commuters, and trade stakeholders eagerly awaiting the bridge’s opening, the focus now shifts to the completion of final border procedures and the announcement of a new operational date.
